I recently started playing Go, and I’ve decided I’ll play it strictly for fun. That means:
- No worrying about ranks. It’s nice that when I play using a computer it calculates an appropriate handicap, but other than that I don’t care.
- Only doing things to improve my game that I find fun and interesting in themselves. That probably means I won’t be studying joseki, which I’m told serious players spend a great deal of time on.
You might look at what I’ve just written and think I’ve decided to be a lousy player. Maybe I have. But fun is what I want, and I don’t think Go gets enough credit for being fun.
Part of the fun, the part that’s easiest to explain without getting technical, is the visual appeal. I’ve had people who don’t play at all tell me the board looks beautiful.
